SUSTAINABLE LAND IMAGING (SLI) ARCHITECTURES OFFER THE POSSIBILITY TO INFUSE NEW TECHNOLOGIES INTO THE LANDSAT MISSION WITH AN EMPHASIS ON SIMPLER COST EFFICIENT AND MORE CAPABLE INSTRUMENTS WHILE PROVIDING DATA CONTINUITY. THIS PROPOSED EFFORT PREPARES FOR THAT EVENTUALITY BY STUDYING THE PERFORMANCE OF A PRISM BASED HYPERSPECTRAL LAND IMAGER (HLI) WITH FULL SOLAR REFLECTIVE SPECTRAL COVERAGE FROM 400 NM TO 2.5 M CURRENTLY ASSESSED AT TRL 2. THE OPTICAL DESIGN FORM HAS SEVERAL ADVANTAGES OVER GRATING BASED SPECTROMETERS PARTICULARLY IN THE AREA OF STRAYLIGHT PERFORMANCE. AFTER DEVELOPING A SET OF STRAWMAN HYPERSPECTRAL SLI REQUIREMENTS AN EXISTING DESIGN IS RE-OPTIMIZED FOR THE MISSION BY DETERMINING SNR VERSUS WAVELENGTH. A HIGH FIDELITY STRAYLIGHT MODEL WILL BE BUILT AND THE SYSTEM ANALYZED TO VALIDATE THE EXPECTATIONS OF EXCELLENT STRAYLIGHT PERFORMANCE. OPTICAL COATINGS AND A SUITABLE FOCAL PLANE WILL ALSO BE IDENTIFIED. THE PLANNED ROUGHLY THREE MONTH EFFORT WILL ASSESS THE PERFORMANCE OF THE TRL 2 SYSTEM.
